The book starts with the birth of Ruby Lennox, the narrator. Her life story unfolds in chapters out of chronological sequence, through which we learn much of her dysfunctional family and what she perceives as her place in it. Ruby always feels as though she is missing something in her life, and through the backstory of her family, she uncovers many dark secrets. I loved her theory of the afterlife as a “Lost Property Cupboard’. This is where all the lost things of our life end up : the lost teeth, library books, cats that ran away, innocence, dreams forgotten upon waking, lost memories. According to Ruby, when we die, we get to claim all these things and take them home. ~ Raguru
