July is known as Disability Pride Month! Disability Pride initially started as a day of celebration in 1990—the year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. That same year, Boston held the first Disability Pride Day. This month is meant to celebrate disabled persons embracing their disabilities as integral parts of who they are, reclaiming visibility in public, and rejecting shame and internalized ableism. You can read more about Disability Pride Month through the American Bar Association. One of the ways we are celebrating Disability Pride Month at the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers is through this Reading List of fiction and nonfiction for all age ranges that celebrate just some of the diverse and unique perspectives of disabled authors and disability activists.
