In her second memoir, Furiously Happy, Jenny Lawson chronicles her journey of trying to live
“furiously happy”. Lawson struggles with depression and other mental illnesses, so life is harder
for her in a lot of ways. However, her memoir is filled with humor as she writes about Rory the
[taxidermied] raccoon, her trip to Australia, losing her keys in a trash can near the lemur house,
and much, much more.
I listened to the audiobook of Furiously Happy, which is read by Lawson herself. I think Lawson
did really well with the narration; she’s probably the only person who could have read her book
and I’m glad she did. There were moments where I burst out laughing because of how good the
humor delivery was. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook, but the physical book is just
as good.
Jenny Lawson doesn’t shy away from the realities of living with mental illness. Mental illnesses
don’t magically go away and Lawson balances the struggles she faces with the moments of
levity. There’s also hope; the hope in knowing that no one is alone in their struggles, no matter
how bad things are.
