The Ex Talk—two rival coworkers pretend to be exes in lieu of unemployment!—is a fresh take on enemies-to-lovers with that certain charm I loved in Today Tonight Tomorrow. The addition of Shay’s personal life and her feelings of inadequacy, imposter syndrome, and lingering grief gave an otherwise tropey romance layers, but I especially enjoyed how Solomon went against type and cast Dominic as the young ingenue to Shay’s seasoned professional. (Perhaps a slight lean toward a gender-flipped His Girl Friday? ) Although I thought the radio show transcripts were a fantastic touch, and I will literally read anything Solomon writes no matter the plot (yes I love her writing that much), I didn’t fall head over heels for The Ex Talk the book the way I did for The Ex Talk the podcast.
