If you had to pick one book to be the “definitive book of the 20th century,” which one would you pick?
The Guardian Unlimited held a poll and asked their readers just that. The answer? George Orwell’s 1984. “Paranoia, propaganda and a state of perpetual war are the defining characteristics of the last century, according to the results of a national survey announced at the Hay festival today.”
The article also mentions the top ten that fell in line after Orwell’s novel.
So do you agree with that? Would have chosen/voted for a different title?
